When the famous journalist of investigation Rhoda Gradwyn is accepted in the private hospital deprived of the doctor Chandler-Powell to remove a scar which disfigures her since childhood, she has in perspective an operation accomplished by an admitted surgeon, a gentle week of recovery in one of the nicest manors of Dorset, and the beginning of a new life. However, in spite of the success of intervention, she will not leave living Cheverell Manor.
